The Great Resignation is coming to Australia -what does it mean?

Has the Covid Pandemic made you rethink your job, your career or the role the work plays in your life? If so, you're not alone! Recent research by Microsoft shows that 40% of the global workforce is considering leaving their job in the next year.

The Great Resignation or Big Quit started in the United States in February 2021 when resignation rates were at an all time high. By April 2021, a record 4 million Americans quit their jobs. In June 2021, 3.9 Million people had left their jobs. The reasons for the departure were pandemic-inspired - workers rethinking long term goals, careers and work conditions. Although the words are misleading, it's not so much The Great Resignation but rather the big job swap. People are moving jobs - seeking better work life balance, more flexibility in working from home and less commute time.

It's predicted the big resignation will make its way to Australia in January 2022 when companies finalise their back-to-office plans. The pandemic has created a power shift from employer to employee. There is a new psychological contract - whereby employees don't just want to be seen as workers, they want their employers want to recognise them as complex human beings with rich and full lives and they want to know how employers will enhance their lives.

Some people are choosing to down size their careers - moving into roles that involve less stress, less hours and less responsibility. Moving away from ambition and choosing to focus on others areas of life.

As The Great Resignation moves to Australia, behavioural scientist Aaron McEwan, from global research and advisory firm Gartner says

"Companies will have to start … selling the work to employees."

He advises Employers to take this once -in-a-generation opportunity and reconfigure work to meet this new world we find ourselves in.
